How It Started
In 1993, while working on a geospatial forestry project, co-founders Don Murray and Dale Lutz experienced firsthand the challenges of exchanging data across different systems and organizations. This gap inspired them to create Safe Software. They began developing a prototype that eventually became FME, a platform that connects people, organizations, and enterprises by seamlessly integrating previously incompatible data.
FME has evolved beyond GIS, now supporting every type of data and serving over 25,000 customers in 125 countries. FME empowers organizations worldwide to tackle complex data challenges. From automating thousands of service requests for the City of Naperville to creating a digital twin for Vancouver International Airport, allowing staff at HOK to automate data integrations without coding experience, ensuring efficient operations at Strukton Rail, and streamlining drainage projects for Woolpert. FME delivers impactful solutions across multiple industries. Explore these success stories to see how FME can transform your data.

City of Naperville’s Automation
The City of Naperville faced significant challenges with manual data entry and inefficient processes across multiple departments. To address these issues, Naperville integrated FME with Cityworks, a public asset management software, automating over 3,300 service requests. The Electric department automated 2,200 requests, while Public Works automated 1,100 requests. With just one employee, they achieved what had previously required three specialized staff members. Using FME, they eliminated manual data entry, streamlined data management, and improved communication across departments, leading to greater efficiency, cost reduction, and enhanced service delivery for citizens.

Vancouver International Airport’s Digital Twin
Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is transforming the passenger experience and operational efficiency using FME for its Digital Twin. A digital twin is a virtual model of physical assets, systems, or processes that allows real-time monitoring and data-driven decision-making. YVR’s Digital Twin replicates the airport environment by utilizing GIS data and integrating live information. This technology helps YVR optimize runway operations, enhance passenger flow, and simulate scenarios for optimal results. By effectively managing these aspects, YVR boosts operational efficiency and elevates service quality for travellers.

HOK’s Streamlined Operations
HOK, a global design, architecture, and engineering firm, faced challenges recruiting and retaining software talent, particularly for roles requiring specialized data integration and management skills. To address this, they turned to FME, leveraging its capabilities to create Trajectory, an intuitive web application that streamlined and simplified their internal processes. With Trajectory, even team members without coding experience could easily manage and automate data integrations, making previously complex tasks accessible across the organization. This innovation significantly reduced the time spent on administrative data tasks, turning what once took hours into minutes.

Strukton Rail Keeps Things on Track
Strukton Rail, a leading railway infrastructure company, manages 2,500 miles of track, covering 35% of Sweden’s rail network. Although they do not own the infrastructure, they uphold strict standards for operational efficiency. Facing challenges like meeting client needs and inefficient manual processes, Strukton Rail turned to FME for support. FME enabled digitization and automation of workflows by integrating Cityworks, ArcGIS, and ERP systems, streamlining work orders and invoicing while facilitating data analysis through Microsoft Power BI. This solution improved efficiency, standardized workflows, and enhanced team data sharing.

Woolpert Saves Big
Woolpert, a global leader in architecture and engineering, relied on manual field measurements and documentation for its sanitary and stormwater drainage projects. This approach was not only time-consuming but also susceptible to errors. As project numbers grew, it became clear that Woolpert needed a more efficient and reliable solution to save time and enhance work quality. To overcome these challenges, Woolpert used FME to streamline data collection, automate calculations, and export data seamlessly into different formats. With FME, Woolpert reduced a 24-minute manual process to just 8 minutes, saving $200,000 annually.
Data Done Right
When you connect your data, you connect the dots. From spreadsheets and cloud platforms to IoT devices and enterprise applications, FME seamlessly brings your data together. Whether you are a city government automating service requests to improve efficiency, an airport gaining real-time insights for smoother operations, an engineering firm streamlining data collection for faster projects, or a rail company enhancing maintenance processes for increased reliability. FME’s no-code solutions help you achieve your goals faster and more effectively.
